97 Points | James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com Wow. This shows amazing aromas of cherries and berries with wet earth, hot stone and violets. Full body. Very dense and layered with hints of cream and floral undertones. The round and creamy tannins are so beautiful now. Intense center palate here. Hard not to drink now, but it will improve with time. (Jun 2019) 95 Points | Huon Hooke, The Real Review Very deep, bold purple/red colour, with a bouquet that took time to emerge fully: exotic spices, dark plums and dried herbs with a subtle earthy-graphite note. Very good fruit concentration. The palate is robust relative to the usual elegant Tyrrell style, the tannins positive and providing firm but understated structure. A top wine. (Oct 2020) Formerly known as Stevens Shiraz. The Old Hillside vineyard on Marrowbone Road was purchased by the Tyrrell family in December 2017. This vineyard contains the “Old Patch”. The Old Hillside Shiraz comes from the younger vines on the vineyard, which have an average age of 50 years. It is a steep, east-facing block that sits right underneath the Brokenback mountain range, which provides great protection. The block features darker, richer soils than those at our Ashmans property. On 2 February and 6 February, the fruit was handpicked and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation took place in our open-top vats. After fermentation, the wine was matured in mostly older French-oak casks (2500l) for 15 months. Glossy, mirrored, saturated, dense and vibrant purple colour, with concentrated dark fruit aromatics. A deep brooding wine; crunchy, textural, tightly coiled and bright with depth of dark fruits across the palate. Regional petrichor notes, (the chemical reaction of the rain hitting the dirt on a hot summer afternoon). Subtle, high quality oak in the supporting role. Textbook Hunter Shiraz.
